Puppy Preschool: What Those Two Weeks Actually Look Like
Every BellaBaby goes home at 8 weeks old. But some families add Puppy Preschool for their Goldendoodle — one extra week with us — and honestly, it’s two of my favorite weeks in the whole process.
I want to tell you what it actually looks like, because “early socialization program” doesn’t quite capture it.
Week One: The Big Firsts
At 7 weeks, your puppy hits this perfect little window where everything is new and nothing is scary yet. We lean into that hard.
The first few days are all about routine. Same wake-up time. Same feeding schedule. Same little crate, same soft blanket. Puppies this age lock into rhythm faster than you’d think, and that consistency teaches them one thing: the world is safe and predictable.
By mid-week we’re working on the basics. Sit. Come when called. Stop launching themselves at faces (a work in progress, honestly). Nothing heavy — just repetition, treats, and a lot of “good baby.”
We also start what I call confidence building. New textures underfoot. Gentle sounds. Different people holding them. A puppy who meets the world in small doses during preschool won’t fall apart the first time someone runs a vacuum.
Week Two: Putting It Together
Week two is where real personality starts to show up. This is the part of puppy preschool I look forward to most.
They’ve got the crate mostly figured out. They sleep through more of the night. They know their name. They figure out that sitting gets them what they want — which, in puppyhood, is everything.
We keep pushing on manners — no jumping, walking on a leash without acting like the world is ending, settling down when things get exciting. These aren’t tricks. They’re just what makes a dog easy to live with.
I also spend a lot of time just being with them this week. Holding them. Talking to them. Letting them practice being away from their littermates without it turning into a meltdown. That separation is so much smoother when they’ve already done it a few times before going home.
What Puppy Preschool for Goldendoodles Actually Gives You
Pick up a Preschool pup at 9 weeks and you’re taking home a dog who:
- Already does crate time without losing their mind
- Knows their name and has a solid start on sit
- Met enough of the world that they don’t spook easily
- Had two extra weeks of one-on-one time with me
Is it magic? No. You’ve still got a 9-week-old puppy and there’s plenty of work ahead. But the foundation is solid, and that matters more than most people realize until they’re in it.
