You’ve done your research, you’ve fallen in love with the doodle life, and now you’re facing the big question: Goldendoodle or Bernedoodle? Both are intelligent, low-shedding, and incredibly family-friendly — but they’re not the same dog. Here’s an honest breakdown to help you decide which is right for your family.
What is a Goldendoodle?
A Goldendoodle is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. They’re known for their warm, sunny personalities, their eagerness to please, and their famously low-shedding coats. Goldendoodles have been around since the 1990s and are one of the most popular family dogs in the United States.
At BellaDoodles, our Goldendoodles are multigenerational — meaning we breed Goldendoodle to Goldendoodle, not back to a Poodle. This gives our dogs more consistent coats, more predictable temperaments, and better overall health than early-generation Goldendoodles.
What is a Bernedoodle?
A Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They tend to be a little more laid-back than Goldendoodles, with a striking tri-color coat (black, white, and brown) and a deeply loyal, calm temperament. Bernedoodles have grown enormously in popularity over the last several years as families discover just how special they are.
BellaDoodles added Bernedoodles to our program thoughtfully and carefully — the same health testing, home-raised environment, and multigenerational approach that defines our Goldendoodle program applies here too.
Temperament: What’s the Difference?
Goldendoodles tend to be energetic, outgoing, and social. They love everyone they meet, thrive on activity, and are endlessly enthusiastic. If your family is active, has kids who want a playmate, or loves outdoor adventures, a Goldendoodle fits right in.
Bernedoodles are a little more selective with their affection — deeply loyal to their family but sometimes more reserved with strangers. They tend to be calmer and more laid-back, which makes them wonderful companions for families who want a dog that’s happy to curl up on the couch as much as play in the yard.
Size: What Should You Expect?
At BellaDoodles we breed both in Mini and Medium sizes:
- Mini Goldendoodle: 25–35 lbs
- Medium Goldendoodle: 35–45 lbs
- Mini Bernedoodle: 25–35 lbs
- Medium Bernedoodle: 35–45 lbs
Both breeds come in manageable, family-friendly sizes that work well in most homes — with or without a yard.
Coat and Shedding
Both Goldendoodles and Bernedoodles are low-shedding when bred correctly. Our multigenerational Goldendoodles and Bernedoodles have wavy to curly coats that shed minimally — far less than a purebred Golden Retriever or Bernese Mountain Dog. Both require regular grooming every 6–8 weeks.
The biggest visual difference is color. Goldendoodles typically come in red, apricot, cream, chocolate, black, or parti/tuxedo patterns. Bernedoodles are known for their beautiful tri-color coats — black, white, and brown — though merle and phantom patterns also appear.
Which is Better for Families with Kids?
Both are excellent with children — this is one area where you really can’t go wrong. Goldendoodles tend to match kids’ energy level and love rough-and-tumble play. Bernedoodles are gentle giants who are patient and calm, which can be wonderful with younger children or toddlers.
Which is Right for You?
Choose a Goldendoodle if you want:
- A high-energy, outgoing, social dog
- A variety of coat colors including tuxedo and parti
- A dog that loves everyone immediately
- An active family companion for hiking, running, or outdoor adventures
Choose a Bernedoodle if you want:
- A calmer, more laid-back temperament
- A deeply loyal dog that bonds closely with your family
- That stunning tri-color coat
- A dog that’s happy with moderate activity and lots of couch time
Honestly? Both are incredible. At BellaDoodles we’ve been raising Goldendoodles since 2010 and added Bernedoodles because families kept asking — and once you meet one, you’ll understand why.
